I AM the Life

Sermon delivered on August 21st, 2016

By: Pastor Greg Hocson

Scripture Text: John 14:1-12

Introduction

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

This is one answer to one question. The question was ...

John 14:5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?

Thomas asked about the way to the Father? If our Lord responded, "I am the way, no man cometh unto the Father, but by me", it would have been sufficient, but He added "the truth and the life." So why did He add "the truth and life"?

He added them, because "way, truth, and life" in relation to coming to the Father, are inseparable. You cannot enter the way apart from the truth. The only way you can access the way is to receive and believe the truth. He is the only way because He is the truth and the life.

I like what Thomas a Kempis said about this ...

"I am the way, the truth, and the life. Without the way there is no going; without the truth there is no knowing; without the life there is no living. I am the way which thou shouldst pursue; the truth which thou shouldst believe; the life which thou shouldst hope for."

As sinners we have no power in ourselves to construct our own ladders to heaven, we have no built in capacity to determine what is truth and to create truth, sin has darkened our minds and sin has alienated us from the life of God.

In our last two Sunday sermons, we considered Jesus Christ as the Way, and Jesus Christ as the Truth. This morning, consider with me Jesus Christ as the Life.

Who is Jesus Christ according to Himself?

Who does He claim Himself to be?

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Jesus Christ not only claims to be the way and the truth, He also claims to be the Life!

I - Jesus Christ is the Author (Creator) of Life

There are people today who still believe that someday, somehow man will be able to create life in the science lab. These people spend their lives, time, and money believing that non-living matters, can create life on its own. Unthinking chemicals and molecules creating life is science fiction, not real science. Because all the scientific evidence and our own life experience show that life does not come from non-life. Rocks cannot and does not produce life on its own. Dead people and dead animals do not breed life. Life comes from life. Life breeds life.

So where does life come from? Who is the Author of life? Where did life originate? The Bible has the answer for us!

Genesis 1:20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. 21: And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. 22: And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.

The very first chapter of the Bible affirms that God created every living creature.

Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Here we read that man was formed out of the dust of the ground but though beautifully formed, it still a lifeless lump of clay. Until something wonderful and miraculous happened - God breathed into this lifeless lump of clay the breath of life! And that lifeless lump of clay became a living soul. Life came not as the result of man's bodily organization, nor evolved from any other animal, but is given as a gift direct from God.

Here is the difference between a living person and a dead person - the difference is the breath of God!

Ecclesiastes 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

And now in our text, our Lord boldly proclaim ...

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

I am the Life! I am the Author of Life. I am the Originator of Life. I am the Creator of Life. No one has life without Me!

Preaching in Jerusalem, Peter told his listeners that they had killed the Prince of life, whom God raised from the dead.

Acts 3:14 But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; 15: And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.

"Prince of Life" is the same word used in the book of Hebrews when Jesus is referred to as the "author and finisher of our faith." He is the uncreated Creator and is the Author, the Originator, the Source of life. The very ones who crucified Him owed their very existence to Him.

Colossians 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

Ephesians 3:9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

II - Jesus Christ is the Giver of Life

If you are alive today, you owe your life to Him.

Acts 17:24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; 25: Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; 26: And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; 27: That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: 28: For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

We owe our physical life

We have life because our Lord gave us life.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2: The same was in the beginning with God. 3: All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4: In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

We owe our spiritual life

Physical life is not the only life there is! Adam was made a "living soul" when God created him, but he and Eve were also created "in the image of God".

Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27: So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

The phrase "created in the image of God" is full of meaning. Among many things, it means men would not only have a body but also a soul and spirit that would also be capable of fellowship and communion with their Creator.

We owe our eternal life

Most of the time when the Bible speaks of life, it does not speak about physical life but eternal life.

Eternal life speaks of the quality of life and the quantity of life. It does not mean mere existence, but a living relationship and fellowship with God. That's what our first parents lost in Eden when they sinned.

Genesis 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

A little boy went to the pet store to buy a puppy and he saw this cute and playful puppy wagging his tail. And the little boy said, I want that one with the happy ending.

That's what I want, I want the life that has the happy ending.

Eternal life is the gift of God through His Son.

He came that men "might have life and have it more abundantly"

John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

He died that men might have everlasting life and not perish

John 3:16-17

Only those who come to Him and eat His flesh and drink His blood have life

John 8:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

John 8:53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.

Only those who see the Son and believe on Him can have life

John 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

III - Jesus Christ is the Sustainer of Life

Colossians 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

Hebrews 1:1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2: Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; 3: Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

In order to live we need bread, water and light and Jesus Christ is all these to us!

He is the Bread of Life

John 6:32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. 33: For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. 34: Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. 35: And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

He is the fountain of the Water of Life

John 7:37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38: He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

Revelation 21:6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

The living bread and living water alone can satisfy our deep spiritual needs, and that's none other than Jesus Christ Himself.

The Light of Life

John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

We need the Light of Life to see.

The Word of Life

1 John 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;

Jesus Christ is the Living Word. He is the Incarnate Word.

Proverbs 36:9 For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light.

We are not only dependent on Jesus Christ for new birth, but also for spiritual nourishment to sustain the new life. He is Himself daily our fresh manna from heaven, to build us up in our most holy faith. We feed on Him through His Word.

John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

He still invites all who are spiritually needy to come to Him.

IV - Jesus Christ is the Redeemer of Life

As we all know something tragic happened to this beautiful creation of God - man fell into sin and death entered into the world. Here is another thing that science cannot explain - death. What is death? Why is there death?

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

If Jesus Christ does not come first we will all eventually die.

Genesis 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

We all go back to dust, but that is not the end of the story.

John 5:28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29: And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

Only God can create, give and sustain life; therefore, only God can redeem and save life. The Creator must also be the Redeemer, for there is none other with the power to accomplish our redemption.

Closing Thought

I want close with this thought ...

Colossians 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2: Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3: For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. 4: When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

If we have life today, whether physical, spiritual or eternal life, we owe it all to Jesus Christ who is the Author and Giver of Life! But Jesus Christ is not mere Creator of Life nor mere Giver of Life, not mere Sustainer of Life; He is our Life!

Ephesians 3:4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

Is He your Life? Do you have a living relationship and fellowship with God or are you simply existing?

Remember Jesus said "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

Jesus Christ is the Way because He is the Truth and the Life. Unless you are on the way you cannot come to the Father, unless you receive and believe the truth you cannot come to the Father, and unless you have life you cannot come and live with the Father.

The apostle John wrote:

John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Jesus promised "eternal life" to all who believe on Him.

John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

Jeremiah 21:8 And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.

Deuteronomy 30:19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: 20: That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.

Receive Him and live! Know Him to be your Way, your Truth, and your Life!

AMEN!
