Introduction

There are many questions in life. To me the most profound question we could ever ask is the questions about life. The million dollar question is, What is life? How would you define life? Since the beginning of time, people have been asking what is the meaning of life? Who am I? Where did I come from? Why am I here? Where am I going when I die?

Do you know who you are? Do you know where you came from? Do you know why you are here? Do you know where you are going? After they give you a memorial service and your eulogy and after they bury you, do you know where you will spend eternity?

You will get many differing answers and it will depend on who you asked.

Richard Dawkins leading spokesman for the Atheist said, "I want to know why we are here. What is the meaning of life? Why does the universe exist? Why does life exist? That's what drew me to Science."

Listen to Richard Dawkins' conclusion about life when he looked to Science for answer.

"In a universe of electrons and selfish genes, blind physical forces and genetic replication, some people are going to get hurt, other people are going to get lucky, and you won't find any rhyme or reason in it, nor any justice. The universe that we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but pitiless indifference. DNA neither knows nor cares.  DNA just is, and we dance to its music."

But Aldous Huxley, a humanist said, "Science has 'explained' nothing; the more we know the more fantastic the world becomes, and the profounder the surrounding darkness."

Do we go to the Ascetics? Those who are committed to complete abstinence, withdrawal from the world and live in caves and dens as monks away from worldliness. 

Do we ask the Hedonists whose pursuit is ultimate pleasure. Pleasure, pleasure, pleasure; that's what life is all about according to Hedonists.

Many go through life not knowing who, why and where of life? Many are content not knowing the answer to these ultimate questions. Many are content to live their lives based on what others have handed them down by their parents, by what their priests or their pastors have told them. Many live their lives based on another fellow human human being's definition of life.

Where do we go for answers? 

Where do we turn to for answers? Do we ask the Atheists, Humanists, Communists, Socialists, Biologists, Psychologists, Hollywood celebrities? Nope, I say, we turn to the Scripture, for the Scripture gives us an accurate answer to the question we ask this morning.

I — Life Originated from God

Romans 11:36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

Life is of God. Life is from God. Life originated from God. Everything comes from him. All living things owe their existence to God. You and I owe our existence to God.

Genesis 1:1

No man, no scientist can produce life.  Men have tried and are still trying but no one can produce life. What can man produce is Frankenstein an ugly monster or an impersonal robot.

Scientists may analyze and manipulate DNA but they cannot and will not be able to produce or create life.

John 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4: In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

Christ the Creator

Acts 17:28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

You did not come to this world by accident and you are not leaving this world by accident. You got here by the work of God. You got here by design and purpose of God, by the creative work of God in Christ.

Evolution is a lie. Why do many believe if it is a lie?

Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's Master of Propaganda said, "If you tell a lie long enough and loud enough, people will eventually believe it."

If you buy into the evolutionary lie your life is reduced to ...

Luke 12:19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

If we reject the truth of the origin of life, if we stray away from that, if we move away from that basic truth, life is reduced to no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but pitiless indifference. DNA neither knows nor cares.  DNA just is, and we dance to its music.

Live as long as you can, stay healthy as long as you can, get as much as you can.

Get all you can, can all you get and sit on the lid.

We don't ask or we don't need Einstein, Carl Sagan, Stephen Hawking, Richard Dawkins, Bill Nye (the Science Guy or the not so Science guy) to tell us the origin of life or the origin of the universe. We don't ask man, for what do men know about the origin? How would they know? They were not around when all things came into being. So we ask the person who was there when the great miracle took place, when the great event took place.

II — Life is Sustained by God

Romans 11:36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

Life is sustained by God.

Colossians 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. (upheld, sustained, held together)

He existed before anything else, and He holds all creation together. In Him all things hold together.

They are kept in the present state; their existence, order, and arrangement are continued by His power. If unsupported by Him, they would fall into disorder, or sink back to nothing.

Nothing less could be sufficient to uphold the universe; and of infinite wisdom - for this is needed to preserve the harmonious action of the suns and systems of which it is composed.

Every atom and every molecule is held together by Christ. The whole universe is kept and preserved by God. One tiny change in our gravity, distance to the sun and the moon, the speed of earth's rotation and orbit around the sun, we wouldn't be here, we wouldn't continue to exist.

Hebrews 1:3 ... he upholds all things by the word of his power.

So Christ not only created the universe and its object but He sustains it now. The very existence of each of us depends on Him. Without Him the universe would fall apart.

All life is through God. All life is sustained by God. All living things owe their continued existence to God.

Frail children of dust,

And feeble as frail,

In Thee do we trust,

Nor find Thee to fail;

Our life is so frail that one beat of our heart goes out of sync we are done, one little rhythm of our heart goes wrong and we are finished. And God holds us and sustains us every moment every day.

Psalm 103:13 Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. 14: For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.

You came from God, you are a being sustained by God (believers and non-believers). He sustains you, every breath, every step of the way. God is holding you together. 

Without God sustaining grace where would we be?

III — Life Will Terminate with God

Romans 11:36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

Life is unto God. Life will terminate with God. All life will end with God. He giveth and taketh.

Dust and man

Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Genesis 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

What is the difference between man and dust? The breath of God. If that breath is removed or is taken away, that person will return to dust. But that breath or soul or spirit will go back to God.

Ecclesiastes 3:20 All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again. 21: Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?

Ecclesiastes 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

Life originated from God. Life is sustained by God. Life will terminate with God.

For all things, you and everything that is, are from Him, all things are through Him and all things are to Him.

Everything coming from God, everything is sustained through the power of God, everything's terminal point is back with God.

Closing Thoughts

If life originated from God, if life is sustained by God, and if life will terminate with God, what is this to us?

Romans 11:36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

Life is for God. The purpose of life is to glorify God.

Revelation 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

Colossians 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

So what is life? What is the meaning of life? What is life all about?

Life is about God. Life is all about God and His glory. It is only reasonable since everything is from Him, everything is through Him and everything is to Him so then to Him be the glory.

So the only right summary is - To God be the glory forever! Amen!

Give your life back to Him.

We are the most ungrateful race in the universe, the most rebellious race on earth. We have insulted God our Creator countless times. Every time we sin, we insult God. We are saying God is not enough.

How did God respond to our rebellion? How did He respond to the most traitorous race on earth?

I am going to teach them lesson they will never forget. I will teach them a lesson for rebelling against me, for insulting me, for being ungrateful. I will love them to death. 

Love so amazing, so divine,

Demands my soul, my life, my all.

May we walk away from this building today with these truth that will radically change our lives. We are changed forever.
